South Dakota: Deadwood

First impressions of South Dakota: sunny, very green, rolling hills, clean air, and beautiful roads. Not very populated. I rather like that!

Loved Spearfish and its wonderful health food store. Headed to Deadwood. Wonderful historic wild west town I've always wanted to see. It's nestled in this gorgeous valley, lots of original buildings, old houses on the hill behind and a great cemetery above. Unfortunately, lots of modern hotels, most of the old buildings are filled with tourist shops all selling the same junk. Some pool halls and card playing saloons. Too bad they don't strive to make it more authentic. Damn, the town is gorgeous!

I always think of Seth Bullock as Timothy Oliphant...

BLM campsite up on Mt. Roosevelt with a view of the valley:

The next morning I got up early and visited Mount Moriah Cemetery with gravesites of Wild Bill Hickok and Calamity Jane.

Walked around in the peace and quiet. Lots of children's graves. One family had gravestones for all their children! The oldest was 12. How sad.

If it didn't snow here, I'd love to live in Deadwood! The Black Hills are so beautiful!
